You’re getting a heat pump? That’s wonderful news! You’re definitely going to be delighted with it. You can’t beat the efficiency, and these days, there are such cutting-edge new materials and manufacturing techniques, you’ll also have unbelievable comfort all year round. That is as long as you have it professionally installed.

Professional installation is key to avoiding future problems with your heat pump and frequent repair needs. You’ve got a reliable and top-notch team coming to replace your old system with your new heat pump? That’s great to hear! Want to be as prepared as possible for when the installers arrive? Here’s how to get ready for your new heat pump installation.

This is an image of two heat pumps next to a house. The headline reads smooth installation: prepping for your new heat pump.

Step 1: Clear Your Schedule

The first thing you’re probably asking is how long this process will take. Well, as long as you don’t need anything extra done, such as having old ducts replaced, it’ll be a pretty simple one-day installation appointment. It shouldn’t take more than eight hours. But if you’re lucky—and well-prepared—it can take as little as half that time!

You see, the first thing your installers need to do is assess the areas inside and outside of your house where they’ll need to be moving equipment and doing work. They’ll tidy up, clear away, and move things so they’ll have plenty of room to take the old units out, bring the new ones in, and get everything connected and set up. And you can do some of that in advance, to reduce the time they’ll spend.

Step 2: Clear the Outdoor Area

Start by assessing where everything will happen. What’s the best spot to park, and the best door to enter with large equipment? Make sure there’s nothing between those two places for anyone to bump into or trip over. Then, make sure it’s equally easy to get to the outdoor unit of your old heat pump or air conditioner. Rake debris, trim plants, or whatever’s necessary to make plenty of space to work.

Step 3: Clear the Indoor Area

From that door you’ve decided would be the best entry point, which way will the technicians need to go? Clear a wide path for them to move through, so removing the old indoor unit and bringing the new one in will be a breeze. Don’t forget to ensure that there’s space for the installers and their tools as they get the indoor unit set up.

Step 4: Clear the Area of Animals

We love animals, and we’re sure your pets are an absolute delight! But your furry (or feathery) family members can get stressed by this sort of commotion. And we would hate to pinch anyone’s tail in the door as we’re carrying equipment through! The best plan is to put pets in a place that’s entirely out of the way of all the activity.
